What is Queens Independent Living Center (QILC)?
QUEENS INDEPENDENT LIVING CENTER is an organization dedicated to full participation in society for people with disabilities through empowerment, universal access through education and advocacy. One of the ways we accomplish this is through providing information and referral to resources within the community. Persons with disabilities can use this information to achieve their social, vocational and personal goals.
These goals are accomplished by:
- Advocating for change through education and legislation.
- Providing direct assistance to individuals with disabilities in the areas of housing, employment, benefits group, peer counseling and voter registration.
What is the Independent Living Philosophy?
The Independent Living Philosophy is a set of values and beliefs based on the premise that people with disabilities are the people best equipped to direct the course of their own lives. It promotes self advocacy, self determination, achievement of the highest level of independence and societal participation in the least restrictive environment.
A few of the services we offer are:
- Supported Housing Subsidies for Persons with Mental Disabilities
- Benefits Planning and Outreach
- Family Support Services for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
- Adaptive Technology and Computer Center
- Independent Arts Gallery
