SSD/SSI

There are two kinds of disability benefits offered by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD) are available to people who have worked a sufficient amount of time during the 10 years preceding the date of application for disability benefits. The number of work credits needed to be fully covered for SSD depends on your age when you became disabled. In addition to being fully covered, in order to be eligible for SSD, you must meet the medical requirements of SSA.
Supplemental Security Income Disability Benefits (SSI) are available to people who do not have a sufficient amount of work within the 10 years preceding the date of application for disability benefits. That is, they are not fully covered. In order to be eligible for SSI disability, you must meet the medical requirements of SSA and you must meet certain financial requirements.
The evaluation of whether you meet the medical requirements of SSA is the same for SSD and SSI Disability Benefits.
